Phil Jones served as the head football coach from 2005-2015, leading the program to a 56-63 overall mark and finishing above .500 in six of his eleven seasons. Jones helped to establish the Hawks as one of the top teams in the NAIA, before carrying that success into NCAA DII and Gulf South Conference play. During his tenure, Jones coached 13 All-Americans, 7 All-Region selections, 85 All-Conference picks, and 9 conference Player of the Year award winners. Tasked with establishing the Shorter program, Jones built a foundation for success through emphasizing the importance of relationships, both with each other and with the Lord.
