A physical education teacher, Dr. Harvey Murphy was Shorter’s first men’s basketball coach from 1957-62, laying the foundation for the men’s basketball program. After his time at Shorter, Dr. Murphy began the basketball program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he coached from 1965-70 and led the 49ers to back-to-back Dixie Conference championships in 1969 and 1970. Dr. Murphy has spent over 30 years at UNC Charlotte, where he is responsible for the evolution of the Health and Physical Education aspect of the Department of Kinesiology that exists today. Leading with integrity, compassion and a sense of humor, Dr. Murphy is a beloved scholar, mentor, coach and friend.
