Hawks Take Down Belmont Abbey in Thriller

Box Score BELMONT,  N.C.- The Shorter Women's Basketball team earned a hard fought 64-60 victory over Belmont Abbey Wednesday night inside the Wheeler Center.

The Hawks started slowly, while Belmont capitalized on turnovers made by Shorter to take a 14-8 lead in the first quarter. The Hawks shifted into second gear in the second quarter as Chelsy Singleton drilled a three-pointer to tie it up at 17 to cap capitalize on a 9-0 run by the Hawks. Both sides traded buckets for the remainder of the period, with the Crusaders taking the 27-23 lead as they entered the half.

The second half proved to be a defensive stalemate between both sides, as both teams combined for just 18 points, with Shorter outscoring the Crusaders 11-7.  As the quarter came to an end, guard Amiya Redus hits a game-tying jumper with 30 seconds to go, ending the quarter locked up at 34. The Hawks came out firing on all cylinders in the final period, going on a 10-4 run thanks to hot shooting from Amya Patterson and Amiya Redus. Chelsy Singleton continued to pour it on for the Hawks as they extended their lead further. The Crusaders made a late push, cutting into the lead, but it would not be enough as the Hawks capitalized on clutch free throws from Patterson to take home the 64-60 victory.

As a team, the Lady Hawks shot an impressive 41% (23-of-56) from the field and a solid 75% (15-of-20) from the free-throw line. Chelsy Singleton poured in a season-high 22 points as Amiya Redus followed closely with 21 points and three steals. D'Nayalah Williams provided huge minutes off the bench, finishing with 11 points and eight rebounds.  Amya Patterson stepped up in the fourth for the Hawks, scoring all 10 of her points in the final period.

"We've emphasized team winning,"  said Head Coach Lasheena Brooks. "Tonight, the light bulb went off in all of those areas in the second half of play. We had big plays from guards Amiya Redus and Chelsey Singleton, and our post came alive in the second half with great rebounding from Rhyan Wilson, Dnyla Williams, and Jaliyah Zackery. Tonight we also got to the free throw line and knocked them down. I'm happy to break the three-game losing streak and for our team to find our identity at the right time."
