SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Shorter Hawks Women's Basketball team's season came to a close in the Quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Championship, falling to the fifth-seeded Lees-McRae Bobcats Friday night in a 72-63 defeat inside of Jerry Richardson Indoor Gymnasium.
The Hawks took control in the opening frame, jumping out to a 10-3 lead, thanks to back-to-back triples from
Chelsy Singleton and
Amiya Redus. The Bobcats crawled back, in dominating fashion, outscoring the Hawks 18-2 for the rest of the quarter as Shorter entered the second frame down 21-12. Lees-McRae did not slow down as the second quarter rolled around, continuing to score at will. The Hawks continued to fight, as a Redus triple at the horn put a dent in the lead, making it 43-31 at the break.
Amya Patterson helped bring the Hawks to within striking distance, scoring nine straight for Shorter to make it a 46-40 game in the third. The Hawks continued to fight back, as Patterson cut it to two with a bucket. The visitors nailed a three for the last points of the quarter, as Shorter entered the final frame down 53-48. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Bobcats opened the fourth on a 12-2 run to extend their lead to double-digits. The Hawks continued to battle, but could not dig themselves out of the run, as their season concluded in a 72-63 final.
Amiya Redus led all scorers with 24 points as
Amya Patterson followed with 17 points and seven rebounds. This marks the second straight year the Hawks have made the postseason, with back-to-back trips to Spartanburg, as well as having one of the most prolific offenses in the conference. The Hawks' back-to-back winning seasons showcase their potential to be a threat in the Conference Carolinas for the foreseeable future.
