Hawks Soar to Quarterfinals After Dominant Win Over Emmanuel

ROME- The Shorter Women's Basketball team toppled #10 Emmanuel in the Second Round of the Conference Carolinas Championship Monday night in a dominant 59-40 victory, punching their ticket to the quarterfinals in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The Hawks' offense was in full swing to begin the frame, jumping out to a 9-3 run. Emmanuel slowly started to cut into the Hawks' lead before Amari Butler solidified Shorter's strong quarter with a three to make it 17-6 after one. Shorter's offense, paired with a smothering defense, began to break open the lead, fueled by strong play from Amiya Redus, Chelsy Singleton, and Amya Patterson. Another large run from the Hawks helped extend the lead as they entered the half in front 30-16. The 16 points in a half is the least amount of points allowed in a half all season, as well as forcing the Lions to shoot 20.8% from the floor.

The Hawks continued to pour it on in the third quarter, shutting down the Lions from the field once more. Shorter's lead grew, extending it to as much as 22 in the period. The visitors continued to make attempts at the lead, but could not find the bottom of the net as Shorter entered the final frame ahead 48-28. Emmanuel started to finally hit their shots in the fourth, but it would not be enough to make a dent in the lead as Shorter's strong play proved to be too much, granting them a 59-40 win.

As a unit, Shorter shot 24-63 (38.1%) from the floor and 6-17 (35.3%) from three. The Hawks dominated the glass, outrebounding Emmanuel 52-30 while holding them to 25.5% from the floor and 18.5% from behind-the-arc. Chelsy Singleton led all scorers with 20 points and nearly recorded a double-double with nine rebounds while also recording three steals. Amya Patterson finished with 14 points and six rebounds as Amari Butler had a well-rounded outing with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Amiya Redus rounded out the scoring for Shorter, scoring 11 points and pulling down seven rebounds.
