Box Score ST LEO, Fla. – Despite a double-double from
Taylor Adams, the Lady Hawks fell to St Leo 72-64 on day two of the Gulf South Conference versus Sunshine State Conference crossover.
Shorter jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first with Adams' six points sparking the Lady Hawks. St Leo quickly scored five unanswered to take a three-point advantage, forcing a Shorter timeout. An
Alexis Luster layup cut the Lions lead to one, but the home team closed the quarter on a 5-0 run and led 16-11 after the first period.
Neither team scored in the second until St Leo broke the draught 3:30 into the quarter. The Lions stretched their lead to as many as 13 points, but
Denise Newton's 3-pointer made the deficit 10 with 5:14 remaining until halftime.
Although St Leo extended its lead again, Adams' jumper made the contest a nine-point game in favor of the Lions, 27-18. With its lead in single digits, St Leo went on to lead by as many as 15 and took a 37-24 advantage into the half.
Shorter opened the second half by scoring six points in two minutes to pull within seven, 37-30. Adams accounted for four of the seven points, while Newton also hit a jumper.
After a timeout, St Leo proceeded to go on another run and led by as many as 15. The Lady Hawks battled back and
Kayla Tillie's layup with 1:01 left in the third ended up being the final basket of the period. Heading into the fourth, Shorter trailed 50-39.
In the final period,
Raven Fair and Adams helped bring the Lady Hawks within eight points, 51-43, but St Leo more than doubled its lead and took a 69-52 advantage with less than three minutes to play.
Down 17, Shorter got within seven points of the Lions, 71-64, in large part thanks to the play of Adams.
The senior scored seven points over the last 3:52 of the quarter, but the Lady Hawks could not get closer and fell 72-64.
The loss drops Shorter to 0-2 on the young season, while St Leo improves to 1-1.
The Lady Hawks outrebounded the Lions 52-45 but shot only 30% from the floor, while St Leo made 37% of its field goals.
Adams led Shorter with 31 points to go along with 20 rebounds. Fair also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 boards. Mary Redmond led the Lions with 26 points.
The Lady Hawks return to action on Wednesday at the Winthrop-King Centre. The team will host Clark Atlanta in its annual Breast Cancer Awareness game which features a high school game prior to
Shorter's matchup with CAU.
Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. for the high school game, while the Lady Hawks are scheduled to take the court at 7:30 p.m.
