Box Score 3 Mason, Ohio--With three games in the books, Baseball stands at 1-1-1 during the NCCAA National Tournament. Shorter lost its first game of pool play to Fresno Pacific (5-0), before tying with Oklahoma Christian (5-5) due to time, and topping Trinity Christian (6-4).
The Hawks will wrap up pool play Friday night against Bluefield College; game time is set for 8:00pm.
Against Fresno Pacific, Shorter couldn't get the offense going, connecting on 4 hits on the day and having runners in scoring position in four different innings. The Sunbirds, however, made the most of scoring opportunities; plating one run in each the first, fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth innings.
In Thursday's nightcap against Oklahoma Christian, the Hawks and Eagles traded the lead; matching each other point for point before having the game called in the ninth due to the tournament imposed three hour time limit, and the fact that it was getting close to midnight.
Oklahoma Christian took the lead, 1-0, in the first on an RBI single from Blake Stringer. Shorter tied the game in the bottom of the inning as
Dylan Riner scored on a groundout from
Zach Santos. Both teams added another run in the second with the Hawks' run coming on a sacrifice fly out from
Dustin Evans. Once again, both teams tacked on a run in the third, to tie the game at 3-3. In the bottom of the inning,
Ian Redetzky tripled to plate Santos.
The Eagles took the lead 4-3 in the fourth on an RBI ground out, but again Shorter tied the game; this time in the eighth inning on a solo homerun from
Jesse Gavigan. Oklahoma Christian regained the lead in the ninth, 5-4. Redetzky delivered an RBI single in the ninth to make it a 5-5 game; which stood as the game was called due to time.
The Hawks earned their first win of the tournament Friday morning, topping Trinity Christian 6-4. At this time no stats are available. However, Shorter took the lead 2-0 in the second inning. The Trolls then tied the game in the bottom of the second, and took the lead 4-2 in the fifth. The Hawks answered in the top of the sixth with three runs to make it a 5-4 game and added an insurance run in the seventh for the 6-4 final score.
