ROME, Ga. – Still in the holiday mood, the Shorter women's and men's basketball would like to say "thanks" to all of those who support them.
When the Lady Hawks and Hawks take on non-conference foe Point University Saturday at the Winthrop-King Centre, there will be free admission to the game as the Lady Hawks hit the court seeking their fourth straight win at 2 p.m. while the Hawks tip off at 4 p.m. going after their fifth victory.
After opening the season with back-to-back road losses, the Lady Hawks (3-2) have reeled off four three consecutive non-conference victories, one over Hiwassee College and two against SIAC member Clark-Atlanta, the most recent one coming on the road in Atlanta on Tuesday when Shorter earned a 67-58 decision.
The Lady Hawks enter Saturday's game averaging nearly 72 points while allowing 67 to foes, while senior guard
Ieshia Alexander leads the charge providing a team-high 16.8 points a game.
In addition, head coach
Vic Mitchell is starting to see each player step into a balanced role he was hoping for at the start of the season as
Cynara Pitt is also averaging in double figures chipping in 10.8 points, while
Shaundricka Mann,
Grace Rogers and
Jackie Hudson are all averaging more than six points for the Lady Hawks.
The Hawks (4-1) will resume action fresh from a 99-93 home non-conference win on Monday over North Georgia, one that saw five players end the game in double figures, with two of them posting double-doubles as Jordan Jack had a game-high 24 points and pull down 10 rebounds and
Dedric Ware finishing with 18 points and 12 assists.
Kordario Fleming (14),
Tyler Alderman (12) and
Chris Daniels (11) rounded out the double-digit scoring for Shorter, which averaged 91.2 points a game.
Ware leads the team averaging 19.8 points a game, Jacks is averaging 18.8 points and seven rebounds and Fleming is providing 14.8 points an outing as the Hawks have opened the season with an accurate touch from the field where they have connected on 53 percent of their shots.
Saturday's game against Point will be the final non-conference test for Shorter as the two teams then turn their attention to their Gulf South Conference opponents for the rest of the season, the first challenge coming on Dec. 4 when they host Union at 6 p.m.
Two days later on Dec. 6, Shorter remains on their home floor at WKC with the Lady Hawks hosting GSC foe Christian Brothers at 2 p.m. with the Hawks following at 4. The teams then hit the road for a pair of conference clashes against West Florida and Valdosta State on Dec. 11 and Dec, 15 respectively, and return to Rome to close out the 2014 portion of their schedule with home GSC showdowns against Alabama-Huntsville on Dec. 18 and North Alabama on Dec. 20.
