Box Score 2 Fort Lauderdale, Fla. -- The Lady Hawks will look to get into the win column when Clark Atlanta visits the Winthrop-King Centre Tuesday at 7:30pm, after dropping both games over the weekend to start the season.
Shorter opened the season Friday afternoon, taking on Barry University in the first of two games in the GSC/SSC Conference Challenge. With a tie game at the intermission, the Lady Hawks looked poised to give head coach
Vic Mitchell his 400
th career win, but came up short; falling to the Buccaneers 68-56.
In the first half Shorter used a 13-3 run over a six minute span to tie the game 23-23 with six minutes to play as
Maggie Peeples netted the first of two free throws. The Lady Hawks added to their advantage and led by as many as five down the stretch, but the Buccaneers came back to tie the game in the final seconds to take a 30-30 game into the intermission.
After the break Barry began to chip away, adding to their lead quickly while holding the Lady Hawks to a minimal 22% field goal percentage, and 20% from beyond the arc.
Ieshia Alexander and
Jackie Hudson both finished in double figures for Shorter; Alexander led with 21 points, while Hudson tallied 11 in her first game as a member of the Lady Hawks.
Saturday Shorter had a tough test in No. 4 Nova Southeastern; dropping the contest by an 87-68 final score.
Alexander once again led the Lady Hawks with 14 points in the game, while
Madison Rice added 12 – all on three pointers – and Peeples chipped in with 11.
Shorter's reserves made the most of their playing time against the Sharks, as 30 of the Lady Hawk's 68 points came from the bench.
Tuesday's home opener will also serve as Shorter's annual Breast Cancer Classic; which is in its 18
th year, and will feature a high school matchup between Rome and Armuchee prior to the Lady Hawks' game against Clark Atlanta.
