Hawks Drop Series to Emmanuel on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.- The Shorter Softball team fell in their conference series opener to Emmanuel Saturday afternoon, falling in game one 9-5 before dropping game two in a heartbreaking 7-5 walk-off defeat in ten innings. 


GAME ONE

The Lions would strike first in the bottom of the third, driving in three to take the lead. Zariah Webb responded in the following inning with authority, driving in four on a grand slam to give Shorter the lead. Lizzy Mitchell capped off the five-run inning with an RBI double to give the Hawks the 5-3 advantage. Emmanuel answered immediately, driving in five of their own to regain the lead and momentum. 

The Lions drove in one more in the sixth to take the 9-5 lead. The Hawks, despite their best efforts, were not able to climb out of their deficit as they fell in a 9-5 final.

GAME TWO

The hosts were rolling in the opening frame of game two, scoring four runs to begin the contest. The Lions added another run in the bottom of the second before Madison Hancock scored on an error to cut into the lead in the top of the third. Kiley Arnold added in another with an RBI single to make it a 5-3 affair. 

After a quiet few innings, the Shorter bats got hot in the sixth, as Madison Hancock drove in a run with a single before Lizzy Mitchell evened things with a single as well to put the Hawks in prime position. The Hawks kept the Lions at bay for the next two innings, forcing extras thanks to strong pitching from Valery Baxter

The Hawks would be the first to strike in extras as Zariah Webb connected on a double that sent a run home to give Shorter the 6-5 lead. The Lions, unfazed, responded with a tying run to stay alive. Unfortunately for Shorter, the Lions drilled a walk-off homer to left field to claim the series in a 7-5 win.

UP NEXT

The Hawks will have their conference home opener against Erskine for a doubleheader series on Tuesday, March 3.
