Shorter Hawks Prepare for Epic Showdown Against No. 3 Valdosta State

ROME, Ga.— "To achieve greatness, start where you are, use what you have, do what you can." — Arthur Ashe

The Shorter University Hawks are about to face their biggest challenge yet in the 2024 season. After a stellar 2-0 start, the Hawks prepare to host the No. 3 ranked team in Division II football, Valdosta State University, in what promises to be an electric contest at Barron Stadium on Saturday, October 5th. The cancellation of last week's game against North Greenville due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene has only heightened the anticipation for this marquee matchup. "Though it was disappointing we know that God has a plan for this team," stated Coach Morrison.

A Soaring Start to the Season

Shorter enters the game riding the momentum of back-to-back victories, including a commanding 47-25 win over Warner University. Led by the steady hand of quarterback Harold Cook, the Hawks' offense has shown balance and firepower, averaging 38 points per game. Cook, boasting an impressive 75% completion rate, has thrown for 402 yards and 4 touchdowns over the first two games. His ability to spread the ball and make decisive plays will be crucial against a Valdosta State defense that prides itself on limiting opponents.

Anchoring the Hawks' offense is wide receiver Trevon Dirden, who has already racked up 196 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Dirden's deep-play ability, highlighted by a 71-yard touchdown in Week 2, will be a key factor as Shorter looks to stretch the field against the Blazers' secondary.

On the ground, Lanear McCrary and Charles Alia form a formidable rushing duo. McCrary has already found the end zone three times, while Alia is averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Together, they will look to control the tempo, especially as Shorter's rushing attack has been one of its most consistent weapons, averaging 178.5 yards per game.

Defensive Backbone

Defensively, the Hawks have been just as impressive, allowing only 30 points across two games. All-Conference linebacker Devonn Lane, along with defensive end Jahseim Henry and defensive lineman Tony Bethea, lead a unit that has been relentless in pressuring opposing quarterbacks. With seven sacks through two games and 14 tackles for loss, the Hawks' defense has demonstrated the ability to disrupt and dominate at the line of scrimmage.

Trent McCord, with 20 total tackles, is taking ownership of the Hawks secondary, while Hugh Barbee and Trey Thomas have been standout playmakers in the secondary, combining for two interceptions. Their ability to contain Valdosta State's potent passing attack will be essential to keeping the Hawks in the game.

The Challenge Ahead: Valdosta State

Valdosta State enters this matchup as a powerhouse, ranked No. 3 in the nation and known for their high-powered offense and stout defense. For Shorter, this game represents not only a chance to prove their mettle but also a golden opportunity to showcase how far the program has come. A victory over Valdosta State would be monumental, not just in terms of rankings but in cementing Shorter as a rising force in Division II football.

While the challenge is immense, the Hawks are approaching the game with belief, resilience, and a sense of purpose. "We know the kind of opponent we're up against," said head coach Zach Morrison, "but we also know what we're capable of. It's a tremendous opportunity to compete at the highest level, and we're excited for the challenge. The team is hungry for this weekend."

Game Plan for Success

For the Hawks, success on Saturday will come down to execution in key areas:

· Offensive Balance: Cook's poise in the pocket combined with the versatility of McCrary and Alia in the run game will be crucial. Shorter's ability to mix the pass and run effectively can keep the Valdosta defense on its heels.

· Defensive Pressure: Valdosta State's offense is lethal, and the Hawks' front seven must find ways to apply constant pressure. Bethea and Henry will be pivotal in winning the battle in the trenches.

· Winning the Turnover Battle: The Hawks have been exceptional at protecting the ball with zero turnovers so far, while forcing key turnovers on defense. Keeping that trend alive will be vital.

A Defining Moment

This game is more than just a contest against a top-ranked opponent—it's a measuring stick for Shorter's progress and potential. With home-field advantage and the energy of the Rome, Georgia community behind them, the Hawks are poised to embrace the challenge, play with heart, and leave it all on the field.

On Saturday, October 5th, Barron Stadium will be the stage for what could be the defining game of the season for the Hawks. As they prepare to face the No. 3 team in the nation, one thing is clear: the Shorter Hawks are ready to soar.
