Box Score 2 ROME,Ga.-- The Shorter softball team hosted Union Union University for a midweek doubleheader. Game one didn't quite fall in the favor of the Lady Hawks as the Bulldogs won 4-2 in eight innings. Shorter came out and took game two with a final score of 11-9.
After the doubleheader, Shorter moves to 4-9 overall and Union goes to 5-7.Â
Game 1Â
Shorter and Union remained scoreless through the four innings. In the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs opened up the game with a double to left center from Morgan Jennings to score Mackenzi David. In the bottom of the inning Shorter plated two runs on a single to left field, this tied the game and forced the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning Union tacked on two more runs as Fallon Groves scored on a single by Brook Puckett, and David scored on a sacrifice fly from Jennings. The Bulldogs held off the Lady Hawks in the bottom of the inning earning the win.
Hannah Morales led the Hawks by going 2-2 while
Taylor Phillips went 2-4.Â
Game 2
Union came out firing the bats to score three runs in the first three innings. In the bottom of the third, Shorter came out with a rally, led by
Colbi Ballard, who started the inning off with a single. Ballard reaches home to score the first run for the Lady Hawks with a single from
Kaylee Combs.
Carlee Graham and Phillips continued the rally with two back to back RBI singles to take the lead, 4-2.Â
In the top of the fourth the Lady Hawks defense allowed one hit and no runs. In the bottom of the fourth, Ballard led the inning off with a single through the left side.
Angela Cecere put down a sacrifice bunt to move Ballad over to second. Morales singled to second base to advance Ballard. Then
Payton Tuder hit and RBI single through the left side to score Ballard, 5-3.Â
The Bulldogs recorded five hits on four runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead 7-5. Shorter recorded one run in the bottom of the fifth with a passed ball to score
Taylor Phillips, 7-6.
Union pushed across two runs to take the lead by three, 9-6. In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Hawks got the bats rolling with a homerun from Combs, followed by a single from Phillips to score
Kaylee George. Ballard continued the hot streak with triple to score both
Paytn Cripps and Phillips. Then Cecere rounded out the inning with a single to score Ballard, 11-9.Â
In the seventh,
Courtney Pinkston went three up, three down with two fly outs and one groundout to secure the win.Â
Ballard led the Lady Hawks by going 3-3 at the plate with a triple and three RBIs. Phillips went 2-3 along with three RBIs, while Combs went 2-4 with two RBIs.Â

Shorter will head to Pensacola, Fla. for the first road conference game of the season as they take on University of West Florida on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 2p.m.Â
