Lady Hawks third at GSC Championships

Clinton, Miss. -- Heading into the final day, the Lady Hawks sat in fifth with 26 points, adding 103 on Saturday to move into third with 129 total points.

Lee took top honors for the second year in a row, tallying 180.5 points for the weekend. Alabama Huntsville followed in second with 177 points.

Ansley Long and Miyah Golden got the scoring started for the day in the long jump, recording 13 points between the two of them with Long taking top honors with a leap of 6.16m. The winning mark was not only a new personal best, but it also set a new meet record, met the DII provisional standard and was the second longest in school history. While, Golden's sixth place jump of 5.38m was a personal best for the junior.

The remaining points for the Lady Hawks came in running events, as Shorter posted points in every event on the afternoon; including four first place finishes and three runner-up honors.

The Shorter 4x100m team of Kemor Anderson, Cheyenne Easley, La'Niya Rogers and Long led things off with a first place finish in a new meet record time of 46.38 that also stands as the eighth fastest in DII this season and meets the provisional standard for Nationals.

SheQuilla McClain followed with a second place finish in the 100m hurdles; where she tied the Shorter record – set by Vanderlyn Watts in 2011 – with a time of 14.11.

Promise Clark added eight points to the total, with a second place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 56.80.

At the 100m distance, the Lady Hawks turned in 22 points as four of the eight finalists donned the blue and white. Long was first, besting the field in 11.55 seconds. The time is the fastest in DII this season, a new school record and just missed the automatic qualifying time by .05. Rogers was third with a time of 11.95, followed by Easley in fifth with a time of 12.02 and by Anderson in seventh with a time of 12.34.

Tanzanie Brown then finished second in the 800m, with a time of 2:14.79 – behind former Lady Hawk Emily Buwalda for Lee, who has now won four consecutive conference championships at the 800m distance.

Golden won her second consecutive GSC Championship in the 400m hurdles as she crossed the distance in 1:03.61.

At 200m, Easley added three points with her sixth place finish in a time of 25.03. And, Makayla Hewell tallied four points for her fifth place finish in the 5000m with a time of 18:13.38.

The final event of the day went to the Lady Hawks as they closed out the meet with a win in the 4x400m relay as Golden, Brown, McClain and Clark teamed up to turn in a time of 3:50.71.
