Clinton, Miss. --Â After the first day of competition, the Hawks sit in second place with 35 points; while the Lady Hawks are fifth with 11.

Shorter's women scored points in two events on the day. In the 10,000m,
Makayla Hewell turned in a second place finish – to score eight points – as she crossed the distance in 36:04.17. While, Alicia McClellan scored three points for her sixth place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 34.41m.

The Hawks scored in three events; with sixteen points coming in the hammer throw as
Corey Freeman turned in a personal best throw of 49.76m to win the event. While,
Byers Hickmon was fifth with a throw of 38.91m for four points, and David Daniel finished with two points for his seventh place throw of 34.03m.

Hickmon followed up his performance in the hammer with a third place toss in the shot put with a personal best throw of 14.07m. Freeman was just behind him in fourth with a throw of 14.01m to give Shorter eleven points for the event.

Shorter's final points for the first day of competition came in the high jump as
Ratayvius Jackson finished third, clearing the bar at a height of 1.89m.
Emile Cesaire added two points for the event with a seventh place jump of 1.74m.

Lane Fletcher rounded out the participants for the men and sits atop the decathlon standings through the first five events. On the day, he won the 100m (11.12 seconds), 400m (51.79 seconds) and the long jump (6.60m). While finishing second in the shot put (10.78m) and high jump (1.72m).
