OKLAHOMA CITY -- Sunday's semifinals of the 2015 NCAA Division II Women's College World Series will have a peachy feel.
In its quest for the school's first NCAA team national championship, the No. 24-ranked Shorter softball squad will have to outduel in-state rival and sixth-ranked North Georgia with a berth in Monday's national championship game on the line.
The Lady Hawks (43-15) need one win tomorrow to advance to Monday's title game. The Nighthawks (51-8), which won two elimination games on Saturday to stay alive, will have to beat Shorter twice to keep their national championship hopes afloat.
The winner of the Peach State showdown will take on the winner of the second semifinal between 2014 WCWS participant Dixie State and California University of Pennsylvania.
Shorter stands on the brink of history after sweeping through its first two games of the WCWS.
The Lady Hawks opened the tournament with a 4-2, come-from-behind victory over All-America hurler Vianna Gutierrez and her seventh-ranked St. Mary's (Texas) Rattlers and followed that up with a 5-0 triumph over NCAA strikeout queen Morgan Foley and her No. 10 Indianapolis Greyhounds.
Yet another decorated arm awaits the Lady Hawks in tomorrow's semifinal in NFCA National Player of the Year Courtney Poole.
Poole leads the country in wins (44) and boasts an anemic 0.94 ERA with the help of 352 strikeouts in 320.2 innings. She has walked just 30 batters on the season, good for an astounding 12-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio.
After dropping a 1-0 decision to Foley in the WCWS opener, Poole has settled in nicely during North Georgia's two elimination game wins. In victories over St. Mary's and Adelphi, Poole has surrendered seven hits and one earned run in 13 innings. She has fanned 15 against just one walk.
North Georgia was no-hit against Indianapolis on Thursday and didn't record a hit in the tournament until it trailed 1-0 in the fourth inning against St. Mary's on Saturday. Tiffanie Burns launched a solo home run to left to tie the game and break the drought and the Nighthawks have rolled since, outlasting St. Mary's 2-1 in extras before run-ruling Adelphi (8-0) via nine hits.
The Nighthawks possess plenty of power in first baseman Kim McMillan (.436 BA, 17 HR, 52 RBI) and Burns (.273, 7, 41). Burns also went deep in the win over Adelphi, giving her two homers in the WCWS.
Shorter has posted 12 and nine hits, respectively, in its two WCWS games and hopes to ride that momentum into the semis. Every starter has recorded at least one hit in Oklahoma City with
Maggie Meacham and
Ericka Bynum leading the way with four RBI apiece.
All-American
Niki Cook has Shorter's other RBI after she drew a bases-loaded walk to push across Shorter's first run against Foley and Indianapolis.
The Lady Hawks' pitching staff has more than held its own through two games with freshman
Amanda Blanchard capturing both wins. Blanchard tossed a complete-game, three-hitter against St. Mary's before turning in 4.2 innings of relief against Indianapolis for her 20th win of the season.
Tomorrow's game against North Georgia is set for a 1 pm ET start. Be sure to check goshorterhawks.com for any potential changes to the Sunday schedule due to inclement weather.
