OKLAHOMA CITY – The reward for Shorter's softball program after its historic opening day win in Oklahoma City?
How about a date with the nation's top pitcher?
That's the challenge facing the 24th-ranked Lady Hawks later today as the 2015 NCAA Division II Women's College World Series continues from ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in the country's heartland.
Shorter (42-15), a 4-2 victor of No. 7-ranked St. Mary's (Texas) on Thursday, squares off with the University of Indianapolis in a winner's bracket clash scheduled for 5 pm ET today.
The Greyhounds (48-13) are fresh off a 1-0 win over No. 6 North Georgia thanks to the pitching prowess of ace and NFCA first team All-American Morgan Foley. The three-time All-American no-hit the Nighthawks for her second no-no of the season, striking out 10 in a dominant performance.
On the year, Foley (39-8) leads all of Division II with 448 strikeouts and boasts a 1.05 ERA. The Louisville, Ky., native has surrendered just 43 earned runs in 285.2 innings and landed on the All-America first team for the second straight season.
Friday's matchup thus features the World Series' most dominant pitcher against the tournament's most productive lineup.
Shorter enters today's action after pounding out an opening day best 12 hits against another one of the nation's top hurlers, St. Mary's ace Vianna Gutierrez-Touchtone.
Eight different Lady Hawks recorded at least one hit in Thursday's win, as Shorter used a two-run double in the fifth from senior
Maggie Meacham to rally from a 2-1 deficit and take the lead for good. Sophomore
Ericka Bynum went 3-for-3 with two RBI in her World Series debut and sophomore
Kameron Carter and third team All-American
Niki Cook racked up two hits each.
Indianapolis will counter offensively with two NFCA second team All-Americans in seniors Taylor Russell and Casey Williamson.
Russell, a first time All-American, is the Greyhounds' career leader in home runs and RBI and leads her team in both categories this season with 14 and 65, respectively. A .330 hitter, Russell went 2-for-3 and drove in the game-winning run against North Georgia.
Williamson is a four-time NFCA All-American and her program's all-time leader in runs, hits, doubles, triples, walks, stolen bases and total bases. She leads the Greyhounds with a .353 batting average and has 26 extra base hits on the year, including 12 homers.
