Lady Hawks win NCCAA South Region

Box Score ROME--Softball topped North Greenville, 6-3, to win the NCCAA South Region Championship and punch its ticket to the National Championship Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Hawks improved to 38-10 on the season, while North Greenville moved to 29-18 after topping Judson College, 5-0, to advance to the championship game.

North Greenville took the lead in the first inning on a passed ball, and added to it in the fourth as two runs scored. First on an RBI double from Rachel Glazebrook and then on and RBI single by Tori Freedman.

Shorter answered in the bottom of the inning as Ericka Bynum singled to center field to plate Kendall Johnson; who singled to start the inning.

The Lady Hawks then took the lead with a five run fifth inning. Kayla Cooper led off the inning with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a single from Jackie Castaneda. One batter later, Shorter tied the game as Felicia Morris delivered a 2-run triple. With no outs, and Morris at third, Bynum delivered the deciding blow; connecting on a 2-run homer to left center. Tori Etheridge scored later in the inning on a ground out from Johnson for the 6-3 final score.

Kalei Kimbrell earned the win for the Lady Hawks; pitching two innings in relief of Maddie Bray. Kimbrell allowed one hit and struck out one. Bray started the game for Shorter, going three innings; while allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Christina Ezell earned the save; pitching two innings, while allowing one hit and striking out one. Rachel Glazebrook recorded the loss for North Greenville; allowing five runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts over four innings of work.

Bynum led the Lady Hawks with three hits and three RBI.

Shorter will now turn its attention to the national stage as it begins play at the NCCAA National Championship May 15 in Troutville, Va.
