Box Score 2 Troutville, Va. -- Softball added to Shorter's National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Championship collection as the Lady Hawks topped Oklahoma Christian University, 2-1, to win their second national title in three years.
Shorter began the day in a semi-final matchup with the Eagles, one in which the Lady Hawks continued as they had been the whole tournament; topping Oklahoma Christian 10-0 in five innings. With the loss the Eagles fell into the loser bracket; where they topped Union University, 10-5, to earn a rematch with the Lady Hawks.
During the first game of the day, Shorter pounded out three home runs to take a 4-0 lead.
Kayla Cooper led off the contest with a solo shot, and in the third
Kendall Johnson added a solo homer of her own and
Felicia Morris delivered a 2-run blast to plate
Jackie Castaneda.
In the fourth the Lady Hawks plated six runs en route to the 10-0 win. Johnson led off the scoring with a 2 RBI double, and Cooper followed with a 2 RBI single; Castaneda and Morris followed with RBI hits to close out the scoring.
Christina Ezell; who was named NCCAA Pitcher of the Year one day earlier, stay dominant as she posted a five inning complete game shutout performance with seven strikeouts. She allowed no runs on one hit with 18 total strikeouts, and five walks through twelve innings of work to earn Pitcher of the Tournament honors.
In the championship game, the Lady Hawks were one out away from winning in the top of the seventh, but Oklahoma Christian took advantage of the a walk and an error to plate the only run allowed by the Lady Hawks on the weekend. With the game tied, 1-1, it moved into extra innings. With two outs in the ninth,
Maggie Meachum reached base on an error, then stole second. Johnson followed with a single, to move Meachum to third, and set up Cooper's late inning heroics; a two out RBI single to give Shorter the championship.
Maddie Bray, despite not earning the win, pitched seven innings of one hit ball with eight strikeouts. Ezell recorded the win after coming on to pitch in the eighth, and allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
Morris, Bray, Cooper and Ezell each earned All-Tournament recognition; with Cooper also earning Most Valuable Player honors, and Ezell top Pitcher honors. Head coach,
Al Thomas also earned NCCAA Coach of the Year recognition.
