Box Score 2 The Shorter Lady Hawks unloaded for eight home runs to sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against host West Alabama on Saturday in Livingston, Ala., extending their win streak to seven games by claiming a 6-3 win in extra innings to open the twinbille and notching a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.
The sweep improves Shorter to 26-9 overall and 14-4 in the GSC - the Lady Hawks remain in first place in the standings - heading into the third and final game of the three-game series on Sunday.
In the opener, with the score tied 3-3 in the eighth, the Lady Hawks went deep three times when
Kendall Johnson delivered a two-run homer and
Kayla Cooper followed suit to give Shorter a back-to-back blast with a solo homer.
Paige Rowland and
Maggie Meachum also went yard with a solo homer each. Cooper headed up the Lady Hawks' 8-hit attach with three hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Johnson and Rowland ended the game with two hits apeice.
Kalei Kimbrell recorded the win on the mound in relief for the Lady Hawks, pitching the final three shutout innings.
The Lady Hawks came up with another power display in the nightcap, including one more back-to-back home run outburst when Shorter put together a three-run rally in the fifth inning - all on round-trippers - to seal the win. This time Cooper led the inning off with another solo shot that was matched when
Jackie Castaneda came to the plate and delivered a solo shot that went out of the ballpark, and with one out
Ericka Bynum hit a solo homer .
Rowland added a second home run on the day in the second game as the Lady Hawks scattered 10 hits with Bynum, Castaneda and
Felicia Morris all collecting two hits each.
Kimbrell once again emerged with her second straight win in relief, pitching the final five innings in shutout fashion while allowing just two hits.
