Softball splits with North Alabama

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROME--Softball split the day with North Alabama; winning the first game, 1-0, and dropping the second, 7-5.

The Lady Hawks move to 35-10 on the season and 21-5 in conference play; while the Lions go to 36-13 overall and 19-10 in the Gulf South Conference.

Game one came down to the last inning as each team was held scoreless. Shorter, however, broke the stalemate as Megan Christensen led off with a walk-off homerun to give the Lady Hawks the win 1-0.

Christina Ezell earned the win; pitching a complete game, two-hit shutout. Through seven innings she struck out ten and allowed one walk. BreeAnna Blevins recorded the loss, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts.

In game two, the Lions jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Shorter answered in the bottom of the inning for a run on a sacrifice fly from Paige Rowland, and cut the lead to one in the third as Rowland singled to bring in Felicia Morris.

In the fourth Libby Olinger homered to give North Alabama a three run lead. But, again, the Lady Hawks answered an inning later to tie the game, 5-5. In the fifth, Ericka Bynum delivered a 2-RBI single to plate Morris and Jackie Castaneda. Tori Etheridge entered the game to run for Bynum, and scored on an error later in the inning.

The Lions scored twice in the sixth to take the lead and earn the win, 7-5, on RBI hits from Courtney Phillips and Chelsea Showers.

Blevins earned the win for North Alabama after pitching three scoreless innings while allowing three hits. Maddie Bray recorded the loss; allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout in one inning of work.

Rowland finished the day with four hits and two hits, while Morris and Kayla Cooper each posted three hits.  

The Lady Hawks will conclude the series and the regular season Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm at Alto Park. Prior to the game, Shorter will honors its seniors for their service to the team over the years.
