Softball sweeps Delta State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROME--Lady Hawks softball swept the doubleheader with Delta State Friday afternoon to extend its win streak to 15 games. Shorter improves to 33-9 on the season and 19-4 in the Gulf South Conference with the wins.

In the first inning of game one the hot hitting of Ericka Bynum continued as she drove in two runs on an RBI single to right field. The Lady Hawks added to the lead in the second inning as three runs scored. First, Maggie Meachum scored on a first passed ball, then Jackie Castaneda singled to plate Kendall Johnson, and Felicia Morris doubled to bring in Castaneda.

The Lady Statesmen broke the shutout in the fourth inning on a solo homerun by Amber Adcock.

Shorter added two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings as Paige Rowland, Castaneda and Morris all delivered RBI hits to give the Lady Hawks the win, 9-1.

Christina Ezell picked up her 15th win of the season with a complete game performance; allowing one run on one hit with seven strikeouts. Taylor Tucker recorded the loss; allowing five runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

In game two the Lady Hawks jumped out to an early, 4-0, lead in the first inning. Bynum once again led off the scoring with a 2 RBI double to plate Castaneda and Morris and then scored on a wild pitch. And then Gracie Ayers singled to bring in Rowland.

In the third, Shorter added to its lead as Rowland homered and Ciera Champion score on an error giving the Lady Hawks the win, 7-0.

Maddie Bray improved to 7-0 on the season with a complete game shutout performance; allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts. Miller Maddox recorded the loss for Delta State pitching two innings, while allowing five runs on seven hits with no strikeouts.

Castaneda finished the day with seven hits and two RBI; while, Morris, Rowland and Bynum each recorded three hits and three RBI.

The Lady Hawks will close out the series with Delta State Saturday afternoon with a single game beginning at 1pm at Alto Park.
