Lady Hawks swing past Young Harris

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Young Harris, Ga.--After beginning the season at No. 4 on the National Christian College Athletic Association's (NCCAA) official top ten rankings, each week the the Lady Hawks have steadily climbed thier way up. This week was no different as Shorter moved up one place from last week to finally sit atop the list as the NCCAA's top team the conference announced Wednesday.

Rankings, however, weren't on the Lady Hawks mind as they travelled to Young Harris College Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader with the Mountain Lions. Winning was on the agenda, and that's just what they did; shutting out Young Harris in both games to extend their win streak to 13 games. The final score in each was, 8-0.

The Lady Hawks improved to 31-9 on the season with the wins, and will enter this weekend's series with fellow Gulf South Conference member, Delta State with a 17-4 conference record.

Ericka Bynum had a huge day for Shorter as she finished the twin bill with 3 homeruns, 2 singles, 10 RBI, and 3 runs scored.  

In game one, the Lady Hawks got things started in the first inning as Kayla Cooper scored on a passed ball. Bynum connected on her first homer of the day in the third inning to plate Jackie Castaneda and Felicia Morris; who'd reached on a double and a single, respectively. Later in the inning Maggie Meachum tripled to bring in Sarah Corn. Morris and Bynum each delivered RBI singles in the fourth to add Shorter's lead, and Kendall Johnson scored on an error in the seventh for the 8-0 final score.

Christina Ezell earned her 14th win of the season, after pitching a complete game one-hitter with twelve strikeouts. Karli Timms recorded the loss for Young Harris, allowing five runs on six hits with one strikeout in two innings of work.

Bynum (2) and Meachum each connected on round-trippers in game two – Bynum's first of the game came in the first inning with two on base. Meachum gave the Lady Hawks a, 4-0, lead with a solo homer in the fourth. In the fifth, Bynum and Tori Willingham each recorded RBI singles to add to the lead before Bynum closed out the day just as she started, with a solo homer in the seventh for the 8-0 final score.

Kalei Kimbrell earned the win in game two; allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts over a complete game performance. Darby Stanford recorded the loss for the Mountain Lions; pitching five innings, while allowing seven runs on eleven hits with two strikeouts.

In total the Lady Hawks pounded out 27 hits on the day; Morris finished with six, Meachum with four, and both – Johnson and Megan Christensen – recorded three.

Shorter will be back in action at Alto Park this weekend as they play host to Delta State with games beginning at 1pm on Friday and Saturday.
