Softball extends win streak to 10 with sweep of West Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Pensacola, Fla.--Lady Hawks' softball extended its win streak to ten games with the doubleheader sweep of West Florida Saturday afternoon. Shorter won the first game, 6-4, before taking the second, 7-0.

The wins improve the Lady Hawks to 28-9 overall and 16-4 in the Gulf South Conference; the Argos move to 23-18 on the season and 12-10 in conference play.

West Florida got on the board first in game one, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Shorter, however, answered with five runs in the third to make it a 5-1 game. Back-to-back singles from Maggie Meachum and Kendall Johnson got things started, Kayla Cooper then walked to load the bases, and one batter later Jackie Castaneda was hit by a pitch; bringing in the first run. Felicia Morris followed with a 3-RBI double to clear the bases, and then came in to score on a single from Ericka Bynum.

In the fourth, the Argos threatened; cutting the lead one on three consecutive singles. The Lady Hawks then added a run in the seventh for the, 6-4, final score on an RBI double from Megan Christensen.

Christina Ezell earned the win for Shorter, allowing four runs on nine hits with eleven strikeouts and four walks in a complete game effort. Taylor Bailey recorded the loss for West Florida, allowing six runs on ten hits with four walks.

Game two was all Shorter as the Lady Hawks shutout the Argos. Shorter got on the board in the fourth as Cooper scored on an RBI single from Bynum, and then added two runs in each of the following innings.

In the fifth, Meachum and Castaneda both recorded RBI singles. Gracie Ayers delivered and RBI single in in the sixth to plate Bynum, then Kameron Carter came in on a sacrifice fly from Meachum. In the seventh, Bynum hit an RBI double, and Ayers added an RBI single to give Shorter the win, 7-0.

Maddie Bray picked up the win for the Lady Hawks after pitching a complete game, one hit gem. Brooke Hale recorded the loss for West Florida; allowing five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts through 5.1 innings of work.

Bynum finished the day with four hits and three RBI. Meachem, Cooper, Morris, and Paige Rowland each recorded three hits in the games.

The series will conclude Sunday afternoon at 2pm EST.
