Box Score 2 ROME--The Lady Hawks split a pair of contests with No. 2 Alabama Huntsville Saturday afternoon at home; winning the first 2-0, before dropping the second 2-1 in 11 innings.
Shorter moves to 16-7 on the season and 8-2 in the Gulf South Conference, while the Chargers move to 16-3 and 5-3 in conference play.
The Lady Hawks scored both of their runs in the fourth inning of game one and that proved to be enough as Shorter held Alabama Huntsville scoreless.
Felicia Morris singled to lead off the innings, and came around to score on an RBI single from
Ericka Bynum. One batter later
Megan Christensen brought in
Kayla Cooper, who'd reached base after being hit by a pitch, on a fly out to right field.
Christina Ezell earned the win for Shorter; pitching a complete game gem, allowing four hits, while striking out nine. Whitney Toler picked up the loss for the Chargers, allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout over 4.2 innings of work.
Game two remained scoreless until the sixth inning, when Haley Thompson fit a sacrifice fly to bring in Tyler Harrison. Shorter tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as
Tori Etheridge scored on an error.
Alabama Huntsville broke the tie in the top of the eleventh on an RBI double from Thompson, and then retired the Lady Hawks in order in the bottom of the inning.
Kimberly Jack earned the win for the Chargers, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Kalei Kimbrell recorded the loss for Shorter, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout through six innings.
Both Bynum and Morris finished the day with three hits for the Lady Hawks.
Shorter will conclude the three game series with UAH Sunday afternoon, March 9, at Alto Park. Game time is set for 1pm.
