Lady Hawks sweep Lander

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Greenwood, S.C.--Softball swept the doubleheader with Lander University Thursday afternoon; winning the opener, 4-0, and the finale, 12-1.

The wins improve the Lady Hawks to 24-9 on the season.

In game one Shorter jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Kayla Cooper reached base on an error to lead off the game, and then came around to score on Jackie Castaneda's second homerun of the season. In the seventh, the Lady Hawks added two additional runs for the, 4-0, final score. Again, Cooper reached base to lead things off, and then crossed the plate as Ericka Bynum connected on her fourth homerun of the season.

Christina Ezell earned the win for Shorter; pitching the complete game while allowing no runs on two hits with twelve strikeouts. Amanda Chastain recorded the loss for Lander; allowing two runs on two hits after only facing three batters to start the game.

The Lady Hawks scored nine runs on six hits in the first inning of game two, all before any outs were recorded. Cooper reached base on catcher's interference to lead off the game; followed by a walk to Castaneda and a single from Felicia Morris. With the bases loaded, Bynum singled to plate Cooper. Paige Rowland walked, one batter later, to bring in Castaneda. Then Megan Christensen and Gracie Ayers delivered back-to-back 2 RBI doubles to make it a, 6-0, game.

Shorter loaded the bases again, and Cooper and Castaneda both walked to plate runs; before Morris delivered a single to bring in Kendall Johnson, who reached base earlier in the inning after being hit by a pitch to give the Lady Hawks a, 9-0, lead.

Lander scored their only run of the day in the second inning on an RBI single from Emily Marousek.

The Lady Hawks added two runs in the third, and a run in the fifth for the, 12-1, final score. In the third as Rowland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Christensen singled to plate Castaneda. In the fifth, Kalei Kimbrell recorded her first RBI of the season in what was also her first at-bat of the season; reaching base on a fielder's choice.

Maddie Bray picked up her fourth win of the season; pitching the complete game while allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout. Taylor Crawford recorded the loss for Lander; allowing eleven runs on eight hits over three innings of work.

Morris finished the day with four hits and an RBI; while Bynum and Christensen each posted three hits and three RBI.

The Lady Hawks will have the upcoming weekend off, but will be back in action next weekend, April 5-6, as they travel to Livingston, Ala. to take on West Alabama in Gulf South Conference play.
