Softball splits with West Georgia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Carrollton, Ga.--Shorter softball split the doubleheader with West Georgia Saturday afternoon; dropping the first game, 2-1, before winning the second game, 8-2.

The Lady Hawks move to 19-9 on the season, and 9-4 in Gulf South Conference play.

West Georgia scored first in game one as Nicole Yancey homered in the third to make it a 1-0 game. Megan Christensen tied the game on a pinch hit homerun in the sixth. In the seventh, Jackie Castaneda doubled, but was left on base as the next three batters were retired in order. The Wolves, however, loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, and Heather Crow's sacrifice fly proved to be the winner as Heather Sexton came in to score; giving West Georgia the win 2-1.

Meagan Stover earned the win for the Wolves; allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts. Christina Ezell recorded the loss for Shorter pitching the complete game; while allowing two runs on four hits with twelve strikeouts.

In game two the Lady Hawks jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning. Kayla Cooper led off the inning with a walk, and came in to score on Felicia Morris' homerun. In the third, Cooper's 2-run homer made it a, 4-0, game.

In the fourth, Gracie Ayers also went deep giving Shorter the 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, West Georgia broke the shutout as Trinity Strickland delivered a 2RBI double. The Lady Hawks went on to add three runs in the fifth for the 8-2 final score, on doubles from Ericka Bynum and Sarah Corn.

Maddie Bray earned her second win of the season, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts over seven inning of work. Stover earned the loss, allowing two runs on one hit with a walk and strikeout after facing just three batters.

Morris finished the day with 4-6 at the plate with two RBI; while both Cooper and Corn also posted two RBI on two hits each.

Shorter will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for the series finale with West Georgia. Game time is to be determined due to impending inclement weather.
