Softball sweeps Union

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Jackson, Tenn.--Softball swept the first two games of the three game series with Union Saturday afternoon; winning game one, 8-0, and taking game two, 10-1.

The wins improve the Lady Hawks to 11-6 on the season and 7-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while also extending their win streak to five games. Union moves to 8-7 overall.

It was all Shorter in game one as they shut out the Bulldogs. The Lady Hawks got on the board in the third inning, as Paige Rowland singled to bring in Maggie Meachum, Ericka Bynum followed with a 2RBI single to plate Rowland and Felicia Morris. Shorter batted around, and Rowland came in to score later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game.

The Lady Hawks scored four more in the seventh en route of the 8-0 win. Bynum singled to plate Meachum to start things off, and scored on a 2RBI double from Kayla Cooper. Morris also scored during the inning on a wild pitch.

Christina Ezell earned the win in a complete game performance, where she allowed no runs on three hits with twelve strikeouts. Kelly Robey picked up the loss for Union, giving up eight runs on fourteen hits with six strikeouts.

Shorter picked up right where they left off in the game two, earning the win 10-1. The Lady Hawks got on the board in the second, as Megan Christensen singled to bring in Cooper, and added three runs in the third to make it a 4-0 game. Union avoided the shutout by plating a run in the third on a single from Reagan Schrader.

In the sixth, Shorter added six runs, two unearned. Each—Bynum, Christensen and Kameron Carter—posted RBI in the inning.

Kalei Kimbrel earned the win in game two for the Lady Hawks, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Hailey Cummings recorded the loss, allowing ten runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Bynum finished the day with a team high five hits and five RBI. Christensen tallied four hits and three RBI on the day, and Cooper posted four hits and 3RBI.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action on March 5 as they travel to Greenville, Tenn. to take on Tusculum College. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1pm. The games originally scheduled for Monday, March 3, have been cancelled due to impending inclement weather.
