Box Score 2 Clearwater, Fla.--Lady Hawks' softball took the field on a rainy Saturday in Clearwater, Fla. for day two of competition at the Eckerd Softball Invitational taking on Florida Tech and Lynn University. Against the Panthers, Shorter fell 2-0, but used two five run innings to top the Knights, 10-1.
In game one, Florida Tech shutout the Lady Hawks, and scored two runs in the fourth inning to earn the win.
Shorter's
Christina Ezell pitched the complete game, allowing the two runs in the fourth inning after a 23 minute rain delay.
Megan Christensen recorded two of the Lady Hawks three hits in the game.
In the game two, Shorter's bat came alive as they pounded out 13 hits en route of the 10-1 win. Lynn scored their only run in the second inning.
The Lady Hawks took the lead, scoring five times in the third inning.
Maggie Meachum singled to start thing off, and came around to score on
Felicia Morris' triple one batter later.
Kendall Johnson followed with a double to bring in Morris and gave Shorter the lead 2-1.
Paige Rowland kept things going with a single, to plate Johnson. Christensen singled to put two on base, and
Jackie Castaneda's sac bunt put them in scoring position.
Ericka Bynum rounded out the scoring for the inning, delivering a 2-RBI double and made it 5-1 game.
In the sixth inning, the Lady Hawks added five more for the 10-1 final score. With
Kayla Cooper and
Kameron Carter on base, Meachum singled and brought in Cooper. One batter later, Johnson' single plated both Carter and Meachum. Rowland then reached after being hit by a pitch, and Christensen delivered a 2-RBI single to bring in Etheridge—who came in a pinch runner—and Johnson for the 10-1 final score.
Kalei Kimbrell picked up the win for Shorter, allowing I run on four hits with four strikeouts over six innings of work.
Johnson finished with three hits and three RBI, Christensen added three hits and two RBI, and Bynum recorded two hits and two RBI.
The Lady Hawks also turned a rare feat in the third inning retiring Cherise McEnery, Kasey Murray and Kaci Vassallo on a triple play. McEnery flied out to leftfielder Meachum, who then threw to first to get Murray, and to second to get Vassallo.
Shorter will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10am as they take on the University of Tampa wrap up the Florida roadtrip.
