Ware's jumper with 2 seconds left lifts Hawks

Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – For the past month, they have found themselves on the short end of games that went down to the wire.

On Thursday night, the Shorter Hawks made sure it didn't happen again.

With two seconds left to play, senior Dedric Ware hit a jump shot that lifted the Hawks to a 98-96 Gulf South Conference win over West Florida, bringing an end to a six-game losing streak and improving their overall record to 9-14 and their conference slate to 6-11.

After the two teams battled to a 47-47 halftime deadlock, the Argos (4-18, 3-13) opened up the second half with a 7-0 run, only to see Shorter fight its way back to take a 60-59 lead when Jordan Jacks converted a three-point play for the Hawks.

West Florida needed just 15 seconds to regain the lead and manage to build a 77-69 advantage with just under eight minutes left to play.

Still, the Hawks refused to go away, mounted yet another comeback and with 1:51 remaining evened the score at 90-90 when Ware found the bottom of the basket from beyond the three-point arc.

That set the stage for the showdown in the final minute.

After Jacks converted a pair of free throws to give the Hawks a 96-95 lead with 19 seconds to go, West Florida's Nate Johnson hit the back end of a pair of foul shots to tie the game one final time with seven ticks of the clock showing.

Five seconds later, Ware hit the game-winner.

Brandon Pullman helped ignite the Hawks' offensive output leading the team with 28 points – he hit 7 of his 10 three-point shots – as Shorter placed four players in double figures with Jacks adding 26 points, Ware finishing with 22 and Steve Johnson, who came up with a key defensive steal down the stretch, coming off the bench to finish with 14.

West Florida's Ellis Young led all scorers with 31 points.

The Hawks return to action Saturday night with another GSC road test against Valdosta State.
