Hawks Down Erskine in Overtime Thriller to Wrap up Regular Season

DUE WEST, S.C.- The Shorter Men's Basketball team went down to the wire with Erskine, defeating them in a 72-64 overtime victory to wrap up the regular season.

Shorter came out of the gates firing, going on an 8-0 run to begin the opening frame. Shorter continued to exert control early, as Axel Holmquist laid it in to make it a 16-5 lead for the Hawks. The Fleet stormed back, going on a 14-2 run to take their first lead of the night. Shorter maintained the lead despite Erskine being on their tail, leading 30-26 at the break.

The second frame began with both teams trading blows early, as multiple lead changes occurred. Donovan Shangase and Chris Bibbs helped weather the storm for Shorter, keeping them afloat as Erskine continued to push the tempo. The Fleet managed to grab a 60-57 lead late on a layup, which would immediately garner a response from Chris Bibbs, who drilled a three to even it all. Both teams were granted one last opportunity, but could not convert, forcing overtime.

Axel Holmquist and Chris Bibbs put the game out of reach for Erskine early in the overtime period, as Holmquist laid it in to put the Hawks in front 67-60. The Hawks cruised the rest of the way, hanging on as they took the contest in a 72-64 final.

"We knew it wasn't going to be an easy battle tonight", said Head Coach Wade Anderson. "It was a battle for 40-plus minutes. I am proud of our guys for stepping up and making big shots and getting the win on the road in a tough environment".

The Hawks shot 24-53 (45.3%) from the floor and went 9-23 (39.1%) from behind-the-arc. Donovan Shangase led the Hawks with 21 points as Axel Holmquist followed with 15 points and eight rebounds. Chris Bibbs and Ja'Myas Davis each recorded double-doubles as Bibbs finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists and Davis with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
