Softball wins both over Valdosta State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Valdosta, Ga.--Shorter Softball swept the first two games of a three game series on the road at Valdosta State Saturday afternoon. Game scores were, 3-1 and 8-6, respectively.

The wins improve the Lady Hawks to 6-5 on the season, and 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play. The Blazers move to 8-5 overall and 0-2 in the GSC.

Game one remained scoreless until the fourth inning, when VSU took the lead on a single from Hannah Strickland, and Shorter tied the game an inning later, as Kayla Cooper scored on a single from Maggie Meachum. The Lady Hawks took the lead, and earned the win, 3-1, on a sixth inning pinch hit, 2-run homer from Ericka Bynum.

Christina Ezell pitched the complete game for Shorter, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Brianna Hancock picked up the loss; allowing three runs and five hits, with five strikeouts though seven innings of work.

In game two, the Lady Hawks scored in the first inning, to take a 1-0 lead, on a homerun from Jackie Castaneda. The Blazers homered in their half of the inning to tie the game.

Shorter took the lead back in the third inning, as two runs crossed the plate. First, on a single from Castaneda, who came around to score later in the inning on a single from Felicia Morris. In the fourth inning, the Lady Hawks added some insurance, extending their lead to 6-1. During the inning, Bynum scored on a fielder's choice, and Meachum and Kameron Carter came in on a single from Castaneda. Paige Rowland homered in the fifth to make it a 7-1 game, and in the bottom of the inning, Valdosta State added a run to cut the lead to 5.

Shorter once again went up by 6 in the seventh, as Tori Etheridge came in to score on a ground out from Bynum. In the Blazers half of the seventh, they mounted a comeback plating four runs, but it wasn't enough and the Lady Hawks held on two win, 8-6.

Kalei Kimbrell earned the win for Shorter in game two, allowing six runs—3 earned—on nine hits, with one strike out over 6.2 innings of work. Ezell earned the save. Rebekah Kiser recorded the loss for Valdosta, allowing five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts over three innings of work.

Castaneda finished with four hits and three RBI on the day; Rowland and Meachum both recorded three hits on the day.

Shorter will conclude the series with the Blazers tomorrow afternoon with a single game beginning at 1:00pm.
