Pullman, Hawks rally to knock off Chargers

Box Score By Jim O'Hara

ROME, Ga. – For the first 20 minutes of the game, they had a hard time finding the mark and never stepped to the foul line for a free throw. The final 20 minutes, however, the Shorter Hawks turned it all around.

Led by a remarkable second half performance by Brandon Pullman, who scored all 17 of his points after halftime, and some clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch, the Hawks hit 62 percent of their shots from the floor to rallied and hand visiting Alabama-Huntsville a 67-65 Gulf South Conference defeat Thursday night at the Winthrop-King Centre.

The win snaps a two-game skid for the Hawks, who now take a 5-7 overall record and a 2-4 GSC mark to conference opponent West Alabama on Saturday.

From all appearances at the outset of the game, the Hawks were unable to get on track, converting just 31 percent of their shots.
But at the same time, the UAH Chargers (6-7, 2-4) suffered their own early-game blues finding just 31 percent of their shots finding the mark but making the most of their trips to the charity stripe where they – unlike the Hawks who didn't shoot a single foul shot in the first half – canned 11 of 14 attempts from the line to assume their largest lead at the half, 31-22.

The Hawks, however, refused to back down as they clawed their way back into the game, outscoring UAH 20-11 over the first eight minutes of the second half with Pullman leading the way as the senior capped the comeback when he scored, was fouled and converted the traditional three-point play with 12:03 to play and tie the game, 42-42.

That effort finally paid off when, with 5:38 to go, Dedric Ware nailed a three-pointer from the corner to tie the game for the final time, 58-58, and two minutes later Jordan Jacks stepped to the foul line where he hit both shots to give the Hawks a 60-58 lead they never lost.

Down the stretch, Shorter's touch at the line proved to be the difference as the Hawks made 9 of their last 12 foul shots, off-setting a UAH comeback try of their own that was headed by Ronnie Mack, who hit a pair of three-pointers in the final 30 seconds.

Mack had the opportunity to tie the game with four ticks of the clock left when he was fouled on another three-point attempt, but could just make his first try.

Three other Hawks joined Pullman in double figures as Ware led Shorter with a game-high 19 points, Jacks finished with 12 and Travis Jones added 10.

Mack and Wayne Dedrick led the Chargers with 14 points each, and Greg Gardner added 10.
