Volleyball wins two on first day at the Pirate Volleyball Classic

In their first day of competition, Shorter's volleyball team came away with two wins. Sweeping Lincoln Memorial, 3-0, and taking the win, 3-1, against Flagler.

In the first matches of the day, the Lady Hawks took on Lincoln Memorial where they finished a straight set victory, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-20). In the matches, Shorter saw many of its new players make an immediate impact. Elizabeth Dowd finished match with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Cheyenne Frady dished out 15 assists, and Erica Baker recorded 9 kills.

Returning players Jasmine Crook, Anna Graham, Tanequa Whitman, and Dena Pierce each had impressive performances against Lincoln Memorial as well. Crook had 10 kills and 12 digs, and Graham recorded 8 kills; while Whitman added 26 digs, and Pierce made 30 assists.

Against Flagler, Shorter needed four sets to seal the deal; winning the first two before dropping the third. In the final set, Jennifer Campbell made three late kills that helped to secure the victory. Match scores were 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, and 25-21, respectively.

Crook added to her totals for the day with 12 kills and 27 digs against Flagler; while Dowd chipped in with 12 kills and 21 digs. Graham, Baker, and Campbell had 9 kills each. Frady added 28 assists to bring her total to 43 on the day, and Pierce finished with 55 total assists—25 against Flagler—and 12 digs.

All in all, it was a successful day for the Lady Hawks as they defeated two teams that are NCAA Division II powers, as both competed in the national tournament a year ago and Lincoln Memorial made its fifth straight appearance.

Tomorrow, September 7, Shorter will take on Georgia Regents University and tournament host Armstrong Atlantic. Game times are set for 10am and 4pm.
