Young Harris, Ga.--Men's basketball split its road trip this weekend as they travelled to Young Harris College to take part in the Peach Belt/Gulf South Challenge. Friday, the Hawks topped North Georgia 108-98, but fell to Young Harris 78-72 to end the tournament Saturday evening.
In Friday's game against the Nighthawks, Shorter was led by 23 point performances from
Dedric Ware and Kurtis Woods, as well as, the first double-double of the season for
Steve Johnson. Johnson came off the bench to record 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The 23 points from Ware marked the fourth consecutive game this season that he's posted a 20+ point game; while Woods recorded a season high.
The Hawks and Nighthawks battled through much of the first half, with North Georgia leading by 9 with 15 minutes to play. But, Shorter took the lead, 34-31, on a 3-pointer from Woods with 4:56 left in the half, and didn't look back. With 31 seconds left in the frame the Hawks led by 17, and went into the break with a 53-36 advantage.
Shorter scored 35 points off the bench during the game.
During Saturday's loss to host Young Harris, Ware and Woods once again led the Hawks; Ware with 18 points and Woods with 17,
Jordan Jacks chipped in with 9.
Shorter was up 31-28 to end the first half, but was outscored 50-41 in the second half. During the second half Young Harris fought to tie the game 5 times, and were able to take the lead for good on a layup by Isaiah Johnson with 11:11 to play.
The Hawks shot 54% from the free throw line and scored 14 points off the bench during the game.
Men's basketball will return home to take on the College of Faith on Monday evening, November 25, at 8pm in the Winthrop-King Centre.
