Box Score COCHRAN, Ga.- The Shorter Hawks picked up their first road win of 2026 in an 8-4 victory against Middle Georgia State in Cochran on Tuesday. The Hawks are now 5-0 overall as they prepare to enter their first conference series this weekend back on the Hill against the reigning Conference Champions, Belmont Abbey.
The Knights would draw first blood with an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. However, in the top of the third, Wilmer Henriquez lifted his fourth home run over the left field wall to put the Hawks on the board, 2-1. The scoreboard would stay frozen until the top of the fifth, when the Hawks brought out the boomsticks. Josh Tattershall sent a baseball over the centerfield fence, his fourth on the season, and on the very next at-bat, Tyler Zawacki clobbered another solo bomb for the Hawks, his second. The Hawks continued to roll in the fifth as Isaiah Sims and Drake Cobb would both score on an error, making it a 5-2 ballgame.
The Knights would drive in one more in the home half of the fifth, but the Hawks entered the top of the sixth still warm. Micah Shipman delivered with a leadoff homer to left for his first of the year, and then Tyler Zawacki came back for seconds, bidding goodbye to yet another baseball to left-center, good for a 7-3 Hawks lead. At the top of the penultimate frame, the Hawks would score their final run of the ballgame on a wild pitch that sent Josh Tattershall around from third. The Knights made one last push in the bottom of the ninth, scoring off an RBI single, but ultimately Logan Bryson was able to enter the game and retire the final Knights hitter to strand both runners and give the Hawks the 8-4 victory.
"We're blessed! This is a really good group that has fun together on the diamond", said Head Coach Wes Timmons. "They played hard, and we threw it well enough on the mound to win. Parsons got the spot start after Ramirez was sidelined yesterday, and he didn't miss a beat. The pen came in after that, competed in the strike zone, and held them to the four runs to see on the scoreboard. Offensively, the guys are still trying to make a name for themselves. We happened to hit a few, well-timed home runs that allowed us to stay in the game and eventually take the lead. I'm excited to see what this group can accomplish, and we'll have a really good test this weekend with Belmont Abbey. To God be the glory!"
