It was a good day for the Hawks on Saturday at the Cumberland Open.
Michael Carew,
Kalvin Harris,
Kade Kitchens each took top honors in their weight class; while
James Corasaniti and
Hank Turner tallied second place finishes, and
Dominick Gibson and
Bret Winters each finished in the top four of their divisions.
In route to top honors in the 174 class, Carew tallied a 4-0 day, winning three of his matches via fall. He opened the bracket with a win over Mike Kryston in 4:14, followed it with a pin in 2:05 over Tavion Askew of Truett-McConnell, and defeated Life University's Jacob Robinson via fall in 2:54. And, in the championship bout he tallied a 9-2 decision over Max Emerson of the University of the Cumberlands.
Harris also went 4-0 on the day to win the 141-weight class. He opened the day with a win over Brewton Parker's Zack Nagorski, and followed it up with a 9-5 decision over Brayden Hartley of Reinhardt and an 8-4 decision over Alema Favors of Cumberland in the semifinals. Before tallying a 9-5 decision over Tanner Tidswell of Cumberland in the 1st place match.
In route to Kitchens' win at 165, the sophomore finished the day adding four more wins to his ever growing total. After receiving a bye to start the day, he turned in a win over Luke Henning of Huntingdon via fall in 2:10, before topping Anthony Codella of Life in a major decision win, 12-0. In the semifinals, he defeated Tyler Button of Life with a 9-5 decision, and in the 1st place match he defeated Cole Overman of Lindsey Wilson win an 8-1 decision.
Corasaniti went 3-1 on the day, for second place in the 149-weight class. To reach the 1st place match he first topped Dyllan Greene of Reinhardt via fall in 6:12, before topping Esteban Remillard with a tech fall decision, 15-0. In the semifinals, he tallied a 3-2 decision win over Jason Moore of Brewton Parker, and took second place after falling to Hunter Bell of Cumberlands via fall in 6:47.
Tuner was 2-1 on the day to finish second in the 184-pound division. He opened the day with a bye, then topped Jacob Matheson of Truett-McConnell with a major decision, 13-3, win. In the semifinals, he defeated Elijah Allgeier with a pin 5:31, and took second place when he fell to Brooks Climmons of Brewton Parker in the tie breaker 3-2.
Winters finished third overall at 285; turning a 5-1day. And, Gibson tallied a 4th-place finish overall at 133. Also, competing in the event for the Hawks were
Chris Way,
Stephen Corasaniti, and
Chance Marriotti.
The team will be back in action this Saturday, February 4, when they travel to Newberry, S.C. to take part in the Newberry Open.Â
