Huntsville, Ala. -- The Shorter tennis teams closed out conference play for the 2016 season Saturday afternoon topping Alabama Huntsville in Huntsville. The Lady Hawks earned the win 6-3; while the Hawks took a 5-4 decision over the Chargers.
On the women's side, Shorter lead 3-0 after doubles as each of the Lady Hawk pairs earned wins.
Ornella Frere and
Agnes Brun topped Madison Gulick and Christina Cabanas 8-5 at number one.
Cassandra Wennestrom and
Julie Rinderknech followed with an 8-5 decision at number two over Marleen Gort and Naomi Esteve. Before
Sicquena Sinclair and
Daniela Chipe defeated Aniek Remmerswaal and Sarah Stearman 8-5 at number three.
In singles, the Lady Hawks earned winning the two, three and four matchups to take the match 6-3. Brun topped Cabanas 6-3, 6-2 in the two spot, followed by Wennestrom over Stearman 6-0, 6-0 at number three, and Chipe over Remmerswaal 1-6, 6-4, 10-3 at number four.
The Lady Hawks improve to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
For the men, Shorter took two of the three doubles games to take a 2-1 lead into singles.
Louis Tourtois and
Jimmy Kerjouan defeated Murilo Basso and Elliot Hopson 8-1; while
Talha Zubair and
Arthur Amat topped Noah Pring and Arthur Menezes 8-3.
Patrick Sanders and
Robert Watson fell 8-1 at number three.
In singles, needed three wins to take the victory; receiving them at one, three and four. Tourtois topped Basso 6-3, 6-3. Kerjouan defeated Brodie Holmes 6-0, 6-1 and Amat took the third line over Menezes 6-1, 6-2.
The Hawks finish conference play with a 7-11 overall record and a 4-5 GSC mark.
Shorter has two remaining matches in regular season play before the Gulf South Conference tournament in Mobile, Ala. April 14-17. Thursday, April 7, the Hawks and Lady Hawks will take on Point University in West Point, Ga. and Saturday, April 9, Shorter travels to Dalton State for the regular season's final match.
