Montgomery, Ala. -- Both the men's and women's tennis teams saw their seasons come to an end as they fell to West Alabama Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. The Hawks dropped a 5-1 decision, while the Lady Hawks fell 5-3 to the Tigers.
The Lady Hawks finish the season at 10-9 overall; while the Hawks turned in an 8-13 mark for the year.
Shorter's women took the lead into singles play; winning doubles 2-1.
Ornella Frere and
Agnes Brun topped Amina Mukhametshina and Georgina Morral 8-6.
Cassandra Wennestrom and
Julie Rinderknech defeated Andrea Tamassone and Lila Araucs 8-6. While
Sicquena Sinclair and
Daniela Chipe took the only loss, falling to Sandra Florez and Evelyn Moreno 8-4.
Brun turned in the lone singles win for the Lady Hawks, topping Moreno 7-5, 6-0. Both Frere and Wennestrom kept things close, forcing a decisive third set, before ultimately dropping their match; Frere by a score of 6-7, 7-5, 2-6 and Wennestrom 1-6, 6-2, 5-7. Chipe was defeated 6-1, 6-1 at number four and Sinclair fell 6-4, 6-2 at number six. Rinderknech's match was left unfinished when UWA earned the win, 5-3.
On the men's side, the Hawks fell behind early; dropping each of the doubles matches.
Louis Tourtois and
Jimmy Kerjouan fell 8-5 at number one,
Talha Zubair and
Arthur Amat dropped the number two matchup 8-4, and the team of
Patrick Sanders and
Robert Watson were defeated 8-6 at number three.
In singles, Tourtois turned in the only win; defeating Casper Schuetze 6-0, 6-2. Kerjouan fell to Julius Kaverinen 6-2, 6-2 and Sanders dropped the number four match to Henrik Sinkko 6-2, 6-1. All other singles' matches were unfinished for the 5-1 score.
