Tennis sweeps Georgia Southwestern to open season

ROME -- The Hawks kept the momentum going from their season opening sweep of Gadsden State on Friday with an 8-1 win over Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon. While, the Lady Hawks opened the season on a high note Saturday with a 9-0 win against the Hurricanes.

Shorter's men's only loss against GSW came at number one doubles as Louis Tourtois and Jimmy Kerjouan fell to Steven Blythe and Oliver Marshall 8-6. The pair of Talha Surmawala and Arthur Amat earned the win in number two doubles 8-1, and Patrick Sanders and Robert Watson recorded the win 8-5 over Joel Landis and Nate Ashley to give the Hawks the lead 2-1 going into singles play.

In singles, Shorter won all matches to close out the win. Tourtois topped Blythe 6-2, 6-2. Surmawala defeated A. Canocas Fernando 6-0, 6-2. Kerjouan tallied a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Beau Millwood; while, Amat posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Landis. Sanders topped Jonathan Martin (6-4, 6-2) and Watson closed out the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Andrew Greneker.

For the women, the Lady Hawks made the most of their first match of the season; winning all sets on the day.

Agnes Brun and Ornella Frere - the lone doubles pair back from last season - tallied an 8-0 win over Sydnee Smith and Celia Castillo-Torres to start off the day. While Daniela Chipe and Cassandra Wennestrom topped Kendall Crew and Lauren Resnick 8-1, and the newcomer pair of Monika Gredzinski and Julie Rinderknech earned an 8-0 win over Anneliese Leahy and Jamie Thomas.

In singles, Frere topped Smith (6-0, 6-1) at number one and Brun defeated Leahy (6-1, 6-0) at number two. Wennestrom posted her first singles victory (6-2, 6-2) over Crew. While, Chipe; who played most of the year at number five, turned in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Resnick at number four. Gredzinski topped Castillo-Torres (6-2, 6-1) and Rindernech earned a straight sets (6-0, 6-0) win over Thomas to wrap of the day.

Both teams will be back in action Thursday afternoon, February 11, when nationally ranked Columbus State visits the Rome Tennis Center for a 1:00pm start.
