DAHLONEGA, Ga – The Shorter men and women's tennis teams fell at North Georgia on Tuesday, 8-1 and 6-3.
The Shorter men faced a stiff test against the #20 ranked Nighthawks. In doubles competition, the Hawks fell 3-0.
Louis Tourtois and
Jimmy Kerjouan fell 8-3, while the doubles teams of
Talha Zubair and
Arthur Amat, as well as
Robert Watson and
Patrick Sanders, fell 8-1.
The men avoided a shutout, with the lone Hawks win coming in singles competition as Zubair defeated Niklas Zielen at the number three spot, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The five other Shorter players fell in their matches, and the Hawks dropped the match, 8-1.
In women's competition, the Lady Hawks battled but fell, 6-3. The Shorter ladies took one of three doubles matches, as
Ornella Frere and
Agnes Brun defeated North Georgia's Kathrin Waidner and Felicia Baratta in the number one spot, 8-3.
Down 2-1 heading into singles play, the Lady Hawks took two matches. In the second spot, Brun won her match against Nighthawk Karina Gurgenyan, 6-0 and 7-5.
Daniela Chipe defeated North Georgia's Sandra Ungricht in three sets. She took the first set 6-4 before falling in the second, 3-6. In the deciding set, Chipe came out ahead, winning by a convincing 6-2 score. Despite two wins in singles play, the Lady Hawks fell, 6-3.
The Hawks now hold a 3-2 record and are 1-0 in conference play. The women are 2-2 and 1-0 in conference action. The two teams return to action on Saturday against Florida Tech. Start time is 1 PM EST from the Rome Tennis Complex in Rome, Ga.
