ROME -- The Hawks and Lady Hawks both fell to nationally ranked Columbus State Thursday afternoon by 7-2 final scores.
Shorter's women move to 1-1 on the season with the loss, while the Hawks go to 2-1 overall.
The Cougars swept all doubles play to take 3-0 leads into the respective singles segments of the match.
Ornella Frere and
Agnes Brun nearly upset CSU's number one doubles pair (Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech) who is ranked 11th in NCAA DII, tying the match at 8 to force the tiebreak; eventually falling 9-8 in the match.
Daniela Chipe and
Cassandra Wennestrom were defeated 8-6 at number two.
In singles, however, both the Hawks and Lady Hawks avoided the shutout by winning two matches.
Brun topped Tobar (6-3, 7-6) at number two. And, at number three, Wennestrom came back in the second set to tie the match and won the third set 10-8 to take the match by a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 final score.

Jimmy Kerjouan defeated KP Pannu 6-0, 4-6, 12-10. While,
Arthur Amat topped
Maciej Kierkus 6-3, 7-6.Shorter will be back in action Saturday morning at 10:00am when they welcome Christian Brothers University to the Rome Tennis Center to begin Gulf South Conference play.
