BIRMINGHAM -- With the fall semester complete the Gulf South Conference announced its first installment of GSC FireSeeds All-Academic and Honor Roll honorees for the 2015-16 academic year. And, Shorter's students were well represented as eight earned All-Academic Team accolades and 101 received Honor Roll recognition.
The eight to receive All-Academic spanned five sports, with two receiving a unanimous selection, three who had previously been named to their sport's All-GSC team (two first team, one second team), one who received the honor for the second straight year, and consisted of two Lady Hawks and six Hawks.
Receiving the honor from Shorter were
Elizabeth Dowd,
Emily Buwalda,
Jonas Uhlhorn,
Fernando De Barros,
Ryan Horn,
Brien Lancaster,
Santavious Bryant, and
Zach Butts.
Dowd and Buwalda, both received First Team All-GSC honors back in November, represent volleyball and cross country, respectively. And we're the lone recipients from their teams. Dowd, receiving the honor for the second straight year, turned in a cumulative GPA of 3.95; while Buwalda received the honor for the first time with a 3.60 GPA.
Three members of the men's soccer team made the list as Uhlhorn was a unanimous selection after the defender and accounting major posted a GPA of 3.91. Joining him were Horn with a 3.72 GPA and De Barros with a 3.64.
Butts and Bryant represented Shorter football on the list, with GPAs of 3.29 and 3.48 respectively. Bryant, like Uhlhorn, was a unanimous selection on the football squad, and added the honor to a Second Team All-GSC worthy season.
Lancaster rounded out the list for Shorter, as the lone member of the Hawks cross country team to receive the academic honor as the junior from Wilmington, N.C. posted a GPA of 4.00 - the only men's cross country honoree to turn in a perfect 4.0 GPA.
To be eligible for the All-Academic team a student athlete must maintain a GPA of 3.2 while also being a significant contributor to his or her team. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. Nominations are made to the Conference, and in conjunction with the institutions' Faculty Athletic Representatives and Sports Information Directors votes were cast for the honorees. Institutions were unable to vote for their own students.
In addition to the eight, 101 student athletes received Honor Roll recognition - most by any of the 14 GSC member institutions. While also marking the third straight year that Shorter turned in the most honorees for the fall season.
Football posted the most student-athletes to the list for the Hawks, having 33 players receive the recognition. While, women's soccer saw 21 earn the honor and Volleyball had 16 students make the list. Men's soccer, who had the most students receive All-Academic Team honors for Shorter, had 15 addition players join the trio as honor roll recipients. Rounding out the list were 13 from cross country, seven women and six men.
For recognition on the annual Honor Roll student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher and must have seen outside competition during the season.
