NCCAA CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTSMOBILE, Ala. – For the second straight year the Shorter women's tennis team has claimed a national championship when the Lady Hawks defeated Dallas Baptist 5-1 to successfully defend their National Christian College Athletic Association title.
The Lady Hawks, ranked No. 23 in the latest Division II poll, closed out the tournament held at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center winning all five matches of the NCCAA championship and end the season with an impressive 22-5 record.
As was the case in their four previous NCCAA tourney tests, the Lady Hawks wasted little time setting the tone for their championship match against Dallas Baptist, sweeping all three doubles spots.
Ornella Frere and
Agnes Brun, who were both named to the All-Tournament Singles and Doubles Teams, won their match with an 8-5 decision over Natalie Gennissen and Amanda Richter;
Aurore Beltrando and
Samya El Hsissen teamed up to stop Cass Wennerstrom and Liz Slaughter 8-6; and
Daniela Chipe and
Sicquena Sinclair combined to down Maria Fernandez and Bianca Tijerina 8-5 to give Shorter a 3-0 match lead heading into singles.
Dallas Baptist was able to avoid the shutout when Sinclair fell to Tijerina 6-3, 6-2, but the Lady Hawks sealed the championship when Brun won her singles clash with Wennerstrom 6-4, 6-0 and Beltrando defeated Slaughter 6-2, 6-2.
Frere, El Hsissen and Chipe were all leading their singles matches when the championship-winning fifth point was secured.
