Cleveland, Tenn. --Â The Hawks got back into the win column Wednesday, topping Lee 9-0 on the road to begin conference play.
The win brings Shorter to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play while the Flames fall to 1-4 overall.
The Hawks made quick work of Lee sweeping all matches to earn the win.
Shorter led 3-0 after doubles as the pair of
Alexis Catillon and
Louis Tourtois topped Rhys Milne and Daniel Hardesty 8-4,
Arthur Tourlousse and
Arthur Amat defeated Ignacio Salom Hernandez and Westley Lemke (9-7), and
Robert Watson and
Talha Surmawala earned the win 8-3 over Kip Kahler and Garrett Byrd.
In singles the Flames put a fight in hopes of keeping the Hawks from completing the sweep; forcing a third set in two of the matches only to see Shorter earn the win in the end. At number two, Milne won the first set (7-5), but was ultimately defeated by Catillon (6-2, 6-2) in the final sets. Surmawala needed three sets, as he fell in the first to Hardesty 6-4, but came back to earn the win with 6-4 and 6-2 scores in the final sets, respectively. Tourtois defeated Hernandez by a narrow 7-6, 7-6 margin in both sets.
Amat topped Lemke (6-2, 6-1), Tourlousse defeated Kahler (6-0, 6-3), and
Patrick Sanders earned the win over Byrd (6-2, 6-1).
Shorter will be back in action Friday, March 6, as the defending NCAA Division II National Champion West Florida Argos visit the Rome-Floyd Tennis Center for a 2:00pm start.
