2015 Shorter Women's Lacrosse ScheduleROME, Ga. – The Shorter women's lacrosse team take the field to begin a new year Saturday when the Lady Hawks host Catawba in the season opener that starts at 1 p.m. at Ben Brady Field.
Despite the departure of eight seniors that helped the team produce a 5-9 record a year ago, head coach
Brittni Dulaney and the Lady Hawks have all the ingredients to take the program to another level, including the return of the team's top two scorers from last season.
Heading up the attack for Shorter on the offensive side of the field will be senior
Mia Wiggins, who led the team with 37 goals – she had a team-high 56 shots on goal - while adding three assists and scooping up 20 ground balls. That performance eventually made Wiggins a spot on the NCAA Division II All-Independent Second Team.
At midfield, junior
Shelby Beverly gives the Lady Hawks a well-tested veteran as she joined Wiggins in finding the back of the net throughout the season last year, recording 28 goals with two assists and shared the team lead with 31 ground balls.
Junior middie
Kari Chambers, who started in all 14 games last year, also returns to the lineup.
Defensively, the Lady Hawks return the services of juniors
Emily Fusan and
Ashley Nuqui, all both saw extensive action last season, to help form the wall in front of the crease.
Between the pipes, Shorter will look to junior goalie
Nicole Kube to stand her ground between the pipes as well as sophomore
Catherine Mitchner.
After taking on Catawba, Shorter remains at home next Wednesday when the Lady Hawks host Reinhardt, and after playing their first road test of the season on Feb. 21 at Erskine, the team is back in Rome for a rare five-game home stand entertaining Mount Olive (March 3), Newberry (March 5), Tusculum (March 10), Ursuline (March 11) and Shepherd (March 18.)
