Lancaster, Penn. --Â The Hawks went 2-0 at the Diplomat Duals in Lancaster, Penn. Saturday afternoon; topping Shippensburg 28-12 and host, Franklin & Marshall, 23-15.
Shorter, who entered the weekend as the NCAA's 20th-ranked team, moves to 9-4 record this year in dual matches. And has posted a 5-0 record since opening the 2015 portion of the season with a loss at Lindsey Wilson two weeks ago.
The Hawks started the day with a win over Shippensburg.
Ben Smith got Shorter on the board at 125, as he defeated Dante Steffenino by a 12-10 decision. The Raiders took the lead 6-3, winning the next two matchups. Then an injury by Shippensburg at 2:04 in the 149 bout, gave
Nate Galloway the win and the Hawks a 9-6 lead.
Shorter put the match away as
Kannon Madden,
Wally Figaro,
Dalton Lane and
Terrence Smith recorded consecutive wins; bringing the Hawks lead to 24-6. Marshall Hobbs earned the win at 197 due to forfeit, and cut Shorter's advantage to 24-12.
Andrew Ewers followed with a major decision win, 14-6, over Francis Slover to close out the 28-12 decision for the Hawks.
Smith got things going again for Shorter against Franklin & Marshall; tallying an 8-6 decision over Edgar Garcia.
Aldon Isenberg added to the advantage as he defeated Patrick Quinlan by fall in 4:48, to bring the Hawks lead to 9-0. At 141, Jason Bing put the Diplomats on the board, defeating
Colby Rinehart 6-4.
Galloway made it 13-3, with a major decision win over Robert Ruiz. Franklin & Marshall won the next two matchups to cut the Hawks advantage to 13-9. Lane and Smith recorded back to back wins at 174 and 184, respectively, to extend Shorter's lead. Lane blanked Gordon Bolig 10-0, and Smith earned the win SV-1 11-6.
The Diplomat's Charles Kerkesner won at 197 via forfeit, and Ewers defeated Alex Henry 7-4; giving Shorter the win 23-15.
The Hawks will be back in action Sunday afternoon as they take part in the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Open hosted by Millersville University.Â
