FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.- The Shorter Hawks wrestling team battled hard Thursday night, closing out their road contests with a 23-19 win over Davenport before falling to Emmanuel in a 26-16 final.
VS. DAVENPORT
The Hawks started on the right foot as
Max Meredith quickly pinned his opponent in the 133-pound division with a 12-second fall, giving Shorter the early lead.
Brayden Gibson earned a 12-6 decision victory in the 141-pound class to fuel the Hawks' momentum. The Panthers crawled their way back into the competition, winning the next three bouts to take the 12-9 lead.
Riley Davis quickly helped the Hawks back into the lead with a 3:25 fall victory in the 174-pound division that would be followed by another fall victory from
Nahzir Turner in the 184-pound class that lasted 2:17 seconds. In the 197-pound bout,
Armond Jones earned a hard-fought 14-11 decision victory to extend the Shorter lead. The Hawks fell in the 285-pound division, but would hang on to secure the 23-19 victory.
VS. EMMANUEL
The Hawks would drop the 141-pound bout after forfeiting the 133-pound division, but would respond well as
Brayden Gibson tallied an 8-4 decision win over his opponent to get the Hawks on the board. After dropping the 149-pound battle,
Jonathan Fogus picked up an 11-0 MD victory over his opponent to keep the Hawks in striking distance. The Hawks continued to trade matches with the Lions, but would get two straight victories from
Nahzir Turner, who won via a 4:12 fall and
Armond Jones with an 8-4 decision to make it a 22-16 score. The Hawks unfortunately would come up just short in the 285-pound class as
Eli Kimball fell via a major decision to make it a 26-16 final.

The Hawks will close out the regular season against Bluefield State on Tuesday, February 10 at 7:00 PM.
