Mobile, Ala.--The Lady Hawks are National Champions!
On a tough day that saw the matches suspended and moved due to weather, Shorter stayed strong and fought hard for a much deserved championship.
En route to the championship the Lady Hawks blanked Azusa Pacific to earn the win, 5-0.
Shorter swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles, with each pair winning by 8-5 final scores.
Candice Laurent and
Aurelie Gaborit topped Emily Harris and Natalie Johnson.
Samya El Hsissen and
Aurore Beltrando earned the win over Lindsey Yeom and Danae Ingwaldson. And,
Sicquena Sinclair and
Ornella Frere defeated Kim Koetterheinrich and Stephanie Quan.
Needing to only win two matches in singles, the Lady Hawks had to wait; enduring a rain delay and a change of venue before returning to play. Once play resumed Shorter fought hard. El Hsissen finished first; defeating Ingwaldson 6-3, 7-6. Meanwhile, Laurent dropped her first set 3-6 to Harris at No. 1, but fought back to win the next two 6-4 and 5-2 to give the Lady Hawks their first ever national championship.
During the tournament, Shorter never dropped a match; earning 5-0 wins in each of its matches.
Head coach,
Orville Adams, was named NCCAA Women's Tennis Coach of the Year for 2014.
