Baseball to play for NCCAA South Region Championship

Box Score West Point, Ga.--Shorter Baseball will play for the 2014 NCCAA South Region Championship Saturday afternoon after topping Toccoa Falls College, 6-5, in ten innings on Friday afternoon.

The win improves the Hawks to 14-33 on the season, and 2-0 in the tournament.

Shorter took the lead in the first inning as two runs scored. Dylan Riner and Dustin Evans started things off on back to back singles, and both came in to score on Ian Redetzky's 2-RBI triple later in the inning.

In the bottom of the second, Toccoa Falls cut the lead to one with a run of their own. And, took the lead in the seven with two runs.

The Hawks answered in the eight to regain the lead, 4-3. Zach Santos singled and came in to score one batter later on an RBI single from Bryan Mathews. Redetzky singled one batter later; plating Tyler Trenary, who came in to run for Mathews. The Eagles tied the game in the ninth to force extra innings on an RBI single from Ronnie Stewart.

Mathews doubled to lead off the tenth, and came in to score on Redetzky's second triple of the game. Jesse Gavigan then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Redetzky and give the Hawks the lead, 6-4. In the bottom of the inning, Toccoa Falls pushed one run across on a homerun from Russ Pritchett, but the Hawks retired the next three batters in order to preserve the win.

Zach Whitaker earned the win for Shorter after coming in to pitch in the ninth inning; allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout. Colton Cross started the game for the Hawks; pitching eight innings, while allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Justin Key recorded the loss for Toccoa Falls, allowing six runs on fourteen hits with four strikeouts over nine innings of work.

Mathews, Redetzky, and Forrest each recorded three hits for Shorter. Redetzky also finished the day with four RBI.

The Hawks will have to wait to until after Saturday morning's game between Toccoa Falls and Clearwater to know who they will play in the championship at 1:00pm. Shorter has already defeated both teams during the tournament.
