Mobile, Ala.--For the third time in a week; Shorter has the opportunity to bring home an NCCAA National Championship. Last weekend, the Hawks doubled the effort when the track team brought home both, the Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field National titles; this weekend the effort shifts to the tennis court as women's tennis finds itself one win away from doing the same.
Having won each of its games so far by 5-0 final scores the Lady Hawks are looking to continue the trend Friday morning, but know they have a tough test ahead with Azusa Pacific; who has only dropped one match in the tournament.
Thursday, Shorter topped Southern Nazarene University to earn a spot in the Championship. The win improves the Lady Hawks to 18-7 on the season, and 4-0 in the NCCAA tournament.
Shorter took the lead early, taking both doubles matches and winning the third by default.
Candice Laurent and
Aurelie Gaborit stayed perfect in the tournament, topping Masha Andrianova and Natalia Moreno 8-4. While
Samya El Hsissen and
Aurore Beltrando edged Marina Shipilova and Karina Kotova by an 8-6 final score.
In singles, the Lady Hawks just needed to finish one match as Beltrando had already won her's due to default;
Sicquena Sinclair did just that for Shorter, defeating Haley Cantwell (6-0, 6-0).
Shorter will take to the court for the final time this season against Azusa Pacific at 10:00am on Friday from Mobile, Ala. to decide the championship.
